History: Katara | Avatar wiki

Personality: In many ways, Katara is like the element that she bends. She is lively, vital, and refreshing. At times gentle like a soft spring rain, at others she rages like a stormy winter sea. In her anger, she bubbles and hisses like a boiling kettle; in her rage, she is cold like the icy planes of the South Pole. She is adaptable and honest, rolling with the punches of life like an ocean wave--a positive trait for her to have, as her life has been marked by significant change and loss.

A teenager on the cusp of womanhood, Katara can be a changeable creature. She is sweet and deeply compassionate, trustworthy, and ferociously loyal. Her moral code is a stringent one, and it’s the driving force behind most of her actions; she once told her friends that she’ll never turn her back on those in need. As a result, she often puts herself in tight spots to protect or give aid to those who can’t help themselves. She is the group’s designated caretaker--the ‘mom friend,’ if you will, even though she hates it when people call her out on that fact.

It’s not her fault that she’s been required to take up a huge amount of responsibility since the premature death of her mother, and the departure of her father to fight in a war that’s lasted for a hundred years. That kind of thing changes a person, reshapes their priorities and their paths in life. For someone so young, it makes them grow up very quickly. For Katara, it made her one of the designated adults in her tiny, dying tribe. So yeah, she worries about people. There’s nothing wrong with that!

In fairness, she’s learning to overcome the fears that drive her to worry so much as she and her friends grow in strength and experience. She is a dedicated student and a hard worker, to the point she was able to go from a novice to a master waterbender in the span of a year. There’s nothing half-hearted about any of her efforts; she’ll work at a task until she accomplishes her goal, even if it means wearing away at obstacles like water wears down a mountain.

That is not to say she can’t also be… temperamental. Katara gets moody sometimes, and can behave rashly or impulsively when she loses her temper. She can also be hardheaded, locking horns with people she disagrees with until they’re able to work out their differences. In spite of her generally genial demeanor, Katara holds grudges with surprising tenacity, and she doesn’t feel compelled to be nice about it, either.

When someone wrongs her, she doesn’t forget it, and can be hard-pressed to forgive until she’s good and ready to do so. While she can often be persuaded to come around, there are people she knows she will never forgive, and she’s okay with that. She's good about recognizing when she's been unkind, however, and is always quick to apologize when she unintentionally hurts her friends.

As mature as she is for her age, Katara still has a lot of growing up to do. The future is unpredictable, but she’s ready to face it, as long as her friends are with her.

Abilities:

Waterbending:
Katara is a master waterbender, able to use her chi--her body’s internal energy--to manipulate water with certain gestures and motions. She can make water float and flow, as well as freezing it. She can’t make water boil, however, she can make mist. She can also purify soiled water to an extent by separating the water itself out of whatever is contaminating it, but this works best when the contaminant isn’t also a liquid.

Katara is also able to use water to heal. She’s most skilled at dealing with injuries like cuts, burns, or abrasions, but with practice she could likely use her abilities to help flush illness out of a body through the chi meridians, as Yugoda demonstrated in her class at the Northern Water Tribe.

The most uncanny ability that only very powerful waterbenders are able to unlock is called bloodbending. As every living thing has water inside of it, Katara is able to use that water to move a person’s limbs against their will. She has only ever used this ability twice, however, and has sworn never to do it again. She doesn’t want to hurt people, after all.

There are limits to her powers, and it can fluctuate from time to time. Waterbenders are always more powerful at night than during the day, because they draw strength from the moon. They are at their strongest during the full moon. Waterbenders also have to have a source of water to use their bending, though some are more resourceful than others.

Survival:
Living at the South Pole means you have to be pretty resourceful to survive. Katara knows how to field dress and prepare animals to be eaten, as well as how to clean the skins for use in anything from clothes to tents to boats. She can set up or break down a campsite in minutes, and can make and mend garments with ease. She knows how to forage and can throw together a meal with just about anything on hand.

Personal Item:

Katara’s personal item is the waterskin she always carries with her, keeping water on-hand in case she needs to bend it.
